From the stage of the Strawberry Music Festival in California to pubs and concert halls throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland, the acoustic duo of Kathy Barwick & Pete Siegfried has delighted and enchanted audiences with a distinctive blend of bluegrass, old-time country, traditional Irish and folk into an engaging Americana fusion showcasing Pete’s exceptional lead vocals, Kathy’s amazing guitar work and sterling duet harmonies. Kathy and Pete combine years of experience into a compelling, highly entertaining duet sound that extends from the Monroe Brothers and other “brother duets” of the 1930s to such iconic modern partnerships as Buddy and Julie Miller.

The duo’s first album, The Trestle, was released early in 2015 by FGM Music. The recording does a superb job of capturing the special blend of Barwick & Siegfried, with material ranging from Gene Autry and Flatt & Scruggs to Jean Ritchie and T-Bone Burnett, with a pair of Siegfried originals (“California Bound” and “Over the Ocean”) anchoring the song list. Their second album, Long Time Gone, was released in May 2016. The latest recording is Stones & Gravel, released in September of 2018, and includes a Pete Siegfried original, as well as pieces authored by friends of the duo, Janet Henry and Mark Berkley.BAGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05879117787427270943noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6074649018840456679.post-41905743107345569292019-04-24T07:06:00.000+01:002019-05-08T22:51:50.329+01:00Pat Coldrick - Classical Guitarist - Monday, May 13th<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">www.patcoldrick.com
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">With his recently released third solo album, "Ophelia" garnering international acclaim, Pat Coldrick returns to Ballymore Acoustic Gigs at Mick Murphy's, Ballymore Eustace, Co. Kildare on Monday, May 13th. Doors open at 8:30pm; showtime is 9pm. Admission is €12.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is a privileged opportunity to see Pat in an intimate setting, just a week before he plays a solo headlining show on the Main Stage of the National Concert Hall - a show that is now SOLD OUT!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Never a man to forget his roots, Pat has played BAG most years since I started, even as his star rose, and much bigger international stages called. It is right and fitting that he should play the gig one last time, before I bring the curtain down at the end of May.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Pat Coldrick is an Irish Classical Guitarist and Composer, who has been working for the last six years in Ireland but has also performed Recitals in Europe, the USA and Russia. Pat has been described as ‘pushing the boundaries of classical guitar’ with his musical interpretations and compositions and has made Classical Guitar exciting, interesting and more accessible to music lovers in general. Through his interpretation of music and by exploring and embracing new technologies he strives to enhance the dynamics of the classical guitar and bring his music to a wider audience both at home and abroad.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">His music defies genre and appeals to a wide cross section of music lovers. While Pat plays his own arrangements of great classical pieces, it is his own compositions that sets him apart – pieces such as Opelia, Lament, CityJam and Antarctica to name but a few. Pat’s skillful and atmospheric connection with his audience is an art form in itself and is in total contrast to other more formal classical performances. He has a very easy going, laid back and unassuming approach and his interaction with the audience and philosophy of ‘entertaining’ rather than ‘educating’ his listeners is a breath of fresh air.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Once Pat begins to play people are immediately captivated by his dedication, passion and skill. His interpretation and delivery of each piece combined with his superb artistry as a performer results in his unique ability to make his audience laugh and equally move them to tears.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">To date Pat has produced 3 albums – Cayendo in 2010, CityJam in 2014 and the latest Ophelia, released in November 2018. Since the launch of these albums his music has been played on all the major radio stations in Ireland and abroad. It’s fair to say that Pat’s music is currently attracting a lot of attention in classical quarters and beyond. Pat is now widely acknowledged as a very accomplished musician and composer who is succeeding in bringing classical guitar music ‘Centre Stage’ where he so passionately believes it belongs.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Pat’s musical formation has not followed normal traditional lines. He is mainly self taught and in a relatively short period of time he has put together an impressive body of work and has gained considerable recognition throughout Ireland and Internationally both as a performer and composer. Some highlights of his achievements to date include:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Album Releases: Ophelia (2018), CityJam (2014) and Cayendo (2010).
On this album his recording of Handel’s Passacaglia was voted best recording of 2014 by the International Guild of Musicians.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Other Artists: Recently recorded tracks with Marti Pellow for his new album due for release later in 2015. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">‘I’m enjoying Pat Coldrick’s Ophelia, his third album. What he’s been doing with classical guitar is extraordinary. His vision of what you can do with a soundscape centred on guitar is super. Throughout the album, like in Sí Beag Sí Mor, the arrangements are pin-sharp. I don’t think the country has quite woken up to what we have in Pat Coldrick – he’s a national treasure.’ - <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Jim Lockhart, <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">RTÉ Producer and Broadcaster, Horslips

This is a difficult post to write; it was always going to be, no matter when it would come about, and its been coming for a while....

Eight years ago, I started down this road not knowing how far it would take me, or for how long.

For those who don't know, the gig was started almost 30 years ago by the late Larry Roddy.

Lar, who lived locally, was a promoter and agent to many of the finest overseas singer/songwriters ever to have toured this country, as well as a champion of emerging Irish artists, many of whom have gone on to forge successful careers at home, and abroad.

In the noughties, I worked with Lar for about five years as resident sound engineer when the Ballymore gig was hosted by The Ballymore Inn, just up the street from the gig's current home in Mick Murphy's, where its been since 2007. During that time I worked with many wonderful musicians, getting to know some quite well, and developing lifelong friendships with a few.

Lar and I went to other gigs together, spent days out rambling, birdwatching. He was one of my very favourite humans, and a dear, dear friend. I miss him, still. After his untimely death in 2010, I decided his musical legacy must not go down with him, that the gig must be kept going - not as a memorial to Lar, but because there was a demand for it, a need.

And so, in August 2011, I promoted my first gig. It would have pleased Lar no end, that Clive Barnes was the first act, as Lar had given him his first breaks on the scene some years earlier - Clive has often told me that he's certain that if Lar hadn't booked him and got behind him back then, helping to get him higher profile gigs opening for bigger acts, his career may never have got off the ground. Gavin Glass appeared with Clive on that first night, and while it was a quiet night, we were off and running.

Shortly after the first few gigs, I figured I needed to raise the profile of the gig and attempt to bring a wider audience. And so, BAG - Ballymore Acoustic Gigs was born, taking advantage of the rise of social media, and emailing lists - anathema to my predecessor! It was my attempt at branding, and it only went and worked! BAG has become known the world over, which is a testament to the gig itself, and the magic that happens in that little room of a Monday night.

Genuinely, I've never seen the gig as mine; rather, it belongs to the artists and the audience - I just bring the two together, and facilitate the magic happening.

Before a promoter can book a gig, there has to be a venue, a room in which the magic can happen. Mick Murphy's is a special room, in a pub full of character, barely touched, and utterly unspoiled by modernity. Phil and Sean Murphy have opened their doors to the music, week in, week out for thirteen years, and allowed me exclusive use of the room as a paying gig, discommoding their regulars in the process. That commitment to the music, and its tradition, has been hugely significant in the continuation of the gig.

In the past eight years, I've been fortunate to present some of the finest songwriters from home and abroad - some emerging, some household names with high profiles. Almost 150 separate artists have played the gig in my time. All of them, wonderful artists, from who's ranks I have drawn some deep and enduring friendships.

With a place to host the gig, and musicians to play the show "in the bag", as it were, the most important element has to be added - You, the audience. Without an audience, we don't have a gig. And audiences have come - week after week, after week. There are some (and you know who you are) that have scarcely missed a gig since the start. That support - that commitment - is not just impressive, and remarkable, but is deeply appreciated. That commitment has many times made the difference between a very quiet night, and a decent turnout, and payout for musicians.
I've had a couple of very quiet nights - five listeners - but both those shows were up there with the very best nights in Mick's. At the other end I've had nights when the packed house barely had room to applaud! That's what live music is all about: there's no knowing when the real magic is going to happen.That's why we're there, listening, anticipating.

But I've done all that I can do, and its time for me to step back. I am no longer able to dedicate the same level of time and energy required to keep the gig at its current level. And I won't do it by halves. Anyone who knows me, knows I'm all in, or nothing. All the possibilities have been considered - do it once a fortnight, once a month.... It still would require the same amount of effort, and mental energy, that I just don't have to spare anymore. Letting the gig slowly decline is simply not an option; that would disrespect it's history, and tradition. I intended to do this a year ago, but I thought I could keep it going, or maybe I just couldn't let it go. But, when it's time, it's time.

So, at the end of the current season at the end of May, I will bring the curtain down on my tenure at the helm of this great little gig.

There is, of course, a demand for the gig - from musicians and audience alike, and that is part of why I'm announcing this now - I'm receiving a lot of inquiries for bookings for the autumn, and beyond, and I can't keep these good people hanging any longer; they have tours to plan, and dates to fill.

I'll do all I can do to help anyone who'd like to take the gig on. But, its the end of the road for me.

This little gig, and all that has made it what it is, has enriched my life, and my own musical creativity in ways I cannot begin to articulate. So, to all who came and listened to a gig; came and played a gig; booked, or set up a gig; and to the Murphy family for hosting them all, I extend my sincere, deep, and profound gratitude. I am indebted to you all.

Meanwhile, there are two months of gigs to go before the curtain call. Come one, come all; let's go out on a high!

Thank-you.

R.T.

P.s. The Annual "Vibe For Larry" will continue on, as has become traditional.
Out of the heartland of America, stomping grounds of Truman and Twain, “powerhouse” troubadour Dana Cooper dedicated himself to a life of music over 40 years ago. This song poet engages and inspires audiences around the world with his quick wit, insightful stories and commanding presence. He is the recipient of the 2014 Heritage Musician award from Pilgrim Center for the Arts in Kansas City, MO. He was also named the 2015 Spirit of Folk award winner by Folk Alliance International. He has performed on Austin City Limits, Mountain Stage and the Kerrville Folk Festival where he was nominated for their Hall of Fame. Cooper’s songs have been recorded by top-notch artists such as bluegrass star Claire Lynch; Irish vocalist Maura O’Connell; and luminary songwriters Pierce Pettis and Susan Werner. Cooper’s mixture of flat-picking, finger-picking and percussive strumming style is legend among other guitarists. An expressive singer his voice is ageless evoking a rich lifetime of experience.

At 12 he sang, played drums, guitar and harmonica in local bands. By 13 he began writing his own songs and at 16 he performed regularly at the prestigious Vanguard Coffeehouse in Kansas City. His deep love and commitment to a life of music drew Cooper away from an art scholarship. Cooper took to the road touring midwest college coffeehouses for one year then sold an electric guitar and his entire record collection to buy a one-way ticket to Los Angeles. Four months later he was signed to Elektra Records where his eponymous first album was released in 1973. The record features such acclaimed players as Leland Sklar, Russ Kunkel and Jim Horn.Years later he returned to San Francisco City College to study another great love, horticulture. Still he played whenever possible in clubs all over the Bay Area. Cooper’s diverse experiences as a taxi driver, warehouseman, nurse’s aid, gardener, waiter and touring musician continued to bring maturity and depth to his songwriting.

Cooper eventually moved to Texas writing, performing and recording with Shake Russell in the late 70s and with his own power trio, DC3 during the early 80s. Returning to his roots as a solo performer Cooper relocated to Nashville in 1988. He has become an integral figure in the Music City songwriting community collaborating with renowned writers such as Tom Kimmel, Sally Barris, Kim Carnes and Don Henry. Cooper has been invited to participate in songwriting workshops from Belfast to Copenhagen to Austin.

His prolific endeavors have resulted in 28 albums. The critically acclaimed Miracle Mile on Compass Records was nominated for a Nashville Music Award as “Best Pop Album” and was chosen by Performing Songwriter magazine as one of the top DIY recordings for the year. Harry Truman Built a Road was named one of the best records of 2002 by The Tennessean and was also chosen as one of the top twelve DIY recordings for that year. Made of Mud released on King Easy Records in 2005 won Cooper the “Best Male Songwriter Award” by Indie Acoustic Project. Working with co-producer/guitarist Thomm Jutz, Cooper released his 27th album, Building a Human Being, in September, 2015.

Cooper and Jutz also coproduced his 28th recording, Incendiary Kid, which will be released October 20, 2017 on Travianna Records. Americana and Folk radio stations across the country are now playing the new CD in anticipation of its release.

Robert K. Oermann in Music Row Magazine says of Building a Human Being “Nashville veteran Cooper wins the Disc of the Day prize. Highly recommended.”

Fellow singer songwriter Buzz Holland says “Cooper is a person who can sing like an angel and play like the devil.”

Legendary Texas singer songwriter Eric Taylor said of Cooper’s performance at Kerrville Fall Festival 2015 “Dana Cooper gave the best solo performance I’ve seen and heard for many years. Could be the best I’ve ever.”
That Albert Niland is not better known, and more widely appreciated is, for my money, a crying shame.
So people like me do what we can to ensure that people like you, gentle reader, get to see him perform live, so that you can witness the remarkable talent he possesses for songwriting, and performing.
Without doubt, Albert Niland has the complete package; outstanding guitar work, coupled with a voice to die for, and a warm, charismatic manner, project self-penned songs of the highest caliber, along with sensitive, expressive interpretations of selected covers.

I'm delighted to be bringing Albert Niland back to Ballymore Acoustic Gigs on Monday, March 11th

Another year, and off we go again!

To bring the curtain up on another BAG year, I'm delighted to announce the return to Ballymore Eustace of the legendary Jim Page, for the first time since 2005, to Ballymore Acoustic Gigs at Mick Murphy's, on Monday, Feb 4th. Doors open at 8:30pm for a 9pm show. Admission is €15
While Jim Page is perhaps best known to Irish audiences for having written the Moving Hearts' hit song “Hiroshima Nagasaki Russian Roulette", there is much that many Irish music fans may not know of his far reaching influence across many musical genres. https://jimpage.net/

Read on.....

Jim Page was born in California in 1949 and grew up into the 1960’s in the San Francisco Bay Area. The music and artistic experimentation of those days left a lasting impression on him. The politics and social awareness was a part of everything that was going on and it has stayed that way in Jim’s music ever since.

Jim got his start in the bars and coffee houses of the lower Bay Area in 1966. On New Years day of 1970 he headed to New York City by thumb, arriving one frozen day in January with a broken fleece lined jacked and 34 cents in his pocket. He soon borrowed a guitar and started hitting the clubs of Greenwich Village, sometimes playing as many as three in the same night. But the scene had gone and the Village a shadow of it’s former self. A year later he headed to Seattle.

The last folk club in Seattle closed soon after he arrived and Jim took the whole town to be his stage. Wherever there were people he would play: the streets, the college campus, the bus station, the bars, and at the city council meetings. One day he walked into the TV station and said “I’ve got a song you should put on the news,” and they did. Including the streets, the campus, the cocktail bars, and the rock and roll clubs Jim would play from 11am in the morning to 2am the next morning, with time out for traveling across town, often playing 5 clubs a night. In 1974, after being threatened with arrest, Jim took on the Seattle city government and legalized street performing. It was a landmark case and Seattle is now a famous city for buskers of all styles.

In 1975 Jim recorded his first album of original music, a vinyl LP called “A Shot Of The Usual”, released on his own label. Two other albums followed in rapid succession.

In 1977 Jim journeyed to the UK and performed at the Cambridge Folk Festival. The response was instant and overwhelming and he walked away with a feature in the national music press, two booking agents, and a European tour for the next year. He was off and running and spent the next 6 years almost constantly on the road. He recorded two albums for a Swedish label called Nacksving and one for WEA Ireland.

It was in Ireland that Christy Moore first heard Jim’s song “Hiroshima Nagasaki Russian Roulette,” and made it a permanent part of his repertoire. When Christy formed the great Irish band Moving Hearts “Hiroshima” was their first single and a centerpiece to their shows.

Jim returned to the States in ’83 and began reestablishing himself as a solo artist and as a player in the northwest music scene. He experimented with duos, trios and more. In ’85
he recorded an album in Portland produced by the great Irish musician Micheal O Domhnaill.

Back in Seattle he began to experiment with electric music. 1988 saw the creation of the legendary band ‘Zero Tolerance’, named after George Bush’s draconian anti drug campaign. It was a four-piece rock and roll band with the exception that the music was focused on the songs and not on the dance. They made one recording and broke up, as rock bands often do, leading Jim to more experimentation, this time with the internationally famous spoon player Artis the Spoonman who was himself the subject of a Grammy award winning song by Seattle grunge rockers Soundgarden. It’s a small musical world.

Fast forward to the 21st century and Jim is busy with multiple projects in simultaneous array – constant solo performance, plus various ensemble configurations, leading to more albums. Jim was one of the founders of the Pike market performers Guild, Seattle’s first street performers union. They organized and ran the first and only Busker Festival to be operated entirely by buskers, and he again petitioned the City Council, this time to created Buskers Week. Another Seattle first!

In 2005 Jim was invited to Taiwan for the first time, and again that next year. In 2007 Jim was included in an all-star cast of the “50 most Influential Musicians In Seattle History,” a position shared with Jimi Hendrix and Nirvana.

To date Jim’s songs have been covered by The Doobie Brothers, Christy Moore, Moving Hearts, Dick Gaughan, Roy Bailey, David Soul, Leftover Salmon, and Michael Hedges.

He has received awards from Artist Trust and Jack Straw Productions. His music has been included on many compilations, including the Grammy Nominated “Best Of Broadside.”

As of this writing Jim continues to write and to perform and to experiment with form and ensemble, and his songs continue to be pertinent and expressive of our times.
To quote the late Utah Phillips:
“Jim Page’s songs get right to the point. He looks at the world clearly and reports what he sees with compassion, humor and a biting sense of irony. And boy! Can he sing and play. If you’re ever going to get the message, this is the messenger to get it from.”

“Every now and again I encounter a singer who gives me a glimmer of hope. Jim Page carries the
light.” - Christy Moore
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">The Niall Toner Band play BAG at Mick Murphy's Bar, Ballymore Eustace, Co. Kildare on Monday, Dec 3rd. This is the last BAG gig of 2018, and it'll be a special one! Doors open at 8:30pm. Admission is €15
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">The Niall Toner Band is perhaps the foremost band on the Irish Bluegrass scene, and Niall Toner has been performing American traditional music, old-time songs and bluegrass since the very early 1970s. With various bands and collaborations to his credit - Lee Valley String Band, Sackville String Band, Hank Halfhead and The Rambling Turkeys, he formed the Niall Toner Band in the early 2000s. A hard-working outfit, with several line-up changes over the years, the current five-piece outfit have recently signed to Pinecastle Records in the US, making Niall, in his own words: "An overnight sensation, after 40 plus years!"
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Those of us familiar with his impact on the Roots/Country scene in Ireland, consider it his just reward for a lifetime dedicated to the truth and honesty of the music.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Full five piece band!
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Niall Toner: Vocals/Guitar/Mandolin
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Richie Foley: Mandolin
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Dick Gladney: Upright Bass (Bull fiddle!)
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Paddy Kiernan: Banjo
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Johnny Gleeson: Dobro/Guitar/Vocals

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Press quotes:

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Toner writes Bluegrass and Country songs that ring true, and would not be out of place on any Bluegrass Master's Albums. This Irishman knows his stuff. 5 Star Review.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Maverick Magazine

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">I admire the way Niall's deep affinity for Bluegrass and American Country Music blends seamlessly with his Irish sensibilities. It makes him a uniquely appealing Artist, and Pinecastle Records are lucky to have him.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Pete Wernick - Doctor Banjo

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Great original Bluegrass Songs and Instrumentals. We are delighted to play Niall Toner anytime.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Niall makes great open-hearted music and his tributes to Bill Monroe and Jimmie Rodgers are just superb. His 'Ocean of Teardrops', composed in-the-style-of The Blue Sky Boys and The Monroe Brothers, is a duet song that just kills me.

Welcome back to the start of another season of BAG - the eighth year of top Acoustic Roots acts from home, and abroad, presented on Monday nights in the intimate surroundings of Mick Murphy's Bar, in Ballymore Eustace, Co. Kildare.

Between early September and the end of May 2019, we will be treated to some of the best acts on the Roots/Folk/Indie scene, some at the top of their game; others emerging - many dates are already booked and confirmed, with more in the pipeline.

In order for this concert series to continue to work, I need you - Dear reader/listener - to keep coming out, and supporting Live music. I could also do with some help spreading the word, and there is no substitute for a personal recommendation. Social media has it's place, but let's face it: many of us began coming to the gig because a trusted friend told us about it, and opened us up to amazing nights of music. All those wonderful memories, just because someone said: "We have to go to this!"

So this is your chance to make memories for a new batch of BAG followers. Please spread the word, share this post via your social media, email it to selected contacts, but above all - talk to your friends about the gigs, and encourage them to come along. Now, more than ever, Live music needs support. Musicians need places to play - this is their life's work - without venues, there are no gigs, and nowhere for artists to perform; without fans of live music coming out to support gigs, there is no reason for venues to bother putting on gigs. It's all connected.

So you are vital to the future of Live music. Your support over the years has been terrific, and is the reason why I can continue doing this. Please keep it up, and bring a friend as often as you can. This year promises to be the best yet, and I'm looking forward to sharing many more wonderful nights of music with you all.

See ye in Mick's!

Buddy Mondlock and Mike Lindauer are almost as much 'favoured sons' of Ballymore Eustace as the locals themselves, as they have been coming and playing music in the village for 20 years. So it is always a personal pleasure to welcome them back for their (pretty much) annual visit ever since.

They return to play BAG at Mick Murphy's Bar, Ballymore Eustace, Co. Kildare on Monday May 21st. Doors open at 8:30pm. Admission is €12.

Buddy Mondlock is one of the finest songwriters of our generation, and if you've never seen or heard him before, I can tell you that he has written songs that you almost certainly do know, for his songs have been recorded by the likes of Janis Ian, Art Garfunkel, Guy Clark, Nanci Griffith, Garth Brooks, and others...
I can also tell you that once you've seen a Buddy and Mike show once, you'll want to keep coming back! Mike Lindauer is, without doubt, one of the finest Fretless Bass guitarists, and harmony vocalist you'll get to see live. He regularly tours with Al Stewart.

So come along; I can promise you a wonderful night of songs and music - but most of you already know that!

Winter Wilson (a pretty cool name for a folk outfit, if you ask me) is/are wife and husband duo, Kip Winter and Dave Wilson. www.winterwilson.com/

They return to play BAG at Mick Murphy's Bar, Ballymore Eustace, Co. Kildare on Monday, May 14th. Doors open at 8:30pm; show 9pm. Admission is €12.

Kip (vocals, accordion, guitar, flute) is one of the finest singers on the circuit, expressing power and emotion in equal measure “from melting to belting”, while Dave (vocals, guitar and banjo) is amongst the top tier of British song writers, with his songs covered by some of folk’s “greats”.

In October 2016, while still busy touring their latest album at the time - “Ashes and Dust”, the follow up to “Cutting Free” which made the Daily Telegraph’s ten recommended folk albums for Summer 2014 - the duo were offered the supporting slot on Fairport Covention's Winter 2018 tour.
That call quickly led to the duo writing and recording a new album, 'Far Off On The Horizon', to take on the tour. The new album has been critically acclaimed as perhaps their best yet.
The tour was a massive success for the duo, and you can read about it here:
https://winterwilson.wordpress.com/2018/02/28/who-knows-where-the-time-went-the-fairport-convention-wintour-2018/

It's no great surprise that the tour was a success for the duo, for it's in live performance that Winter Wilson really excel, bringing a sense of intimacy to every stage, welcoming audiences into their world, mixing songs with stories of life on the road. “This isn’t a performance – it’s a domestic!”

Tight harmonies, killer songs and a lot of fun – that’s Winter Wilson.

“The precision and sophistication of the writing and playing blows me away. I am so glad to be involved,” writes guitar legend Michael Chapman in his introduction to Sarah McQuaid’s fifth solo album If We Dig Any Deeper It Could Get Dangerous – which he offered to produce after meeting Sarah at a festival where they were both on the bill.

Recently honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Ards International Guitar Festival in Northern Ireland, Sarah’s also drawn critical praise for her voice (which has been variously likened to malt whiskey and melted chocolate) and her engaging rapport with audiences: “I’ve attended hundreds of concerts of all kinds, and her subtle mastery onstage launches her straight into my fave shows ever,” wrote The Huffington Post.

With the release of her new album, the Madrid-born, Chicago-raised, Cornwall-based singer/songwriter has expanded her battery of instruments to include piano, electric guitar and drum, and it’s drawn critical raves internationally: Dutch music magazine Heaven hailed it as “an early contender for folk album of 2018,” the UK’s fRoots said it was “a collection to savour” and the USA’s PopMatters called it “a gateway into a true innovator’s soul.”

“Seeing a shared world in a new way, from a different angle, is the role of the songwriter. Sarah gets a gold star on that front. This is a fabulous album.” —The Afterword

“A darkly melodic, richly layered folk tapestry ... haunting and sparse, yet beautifully rendered ... a voice as thick and soft as fur.” —Elmore Magazine

“A work of formidable passion.” —FolkWords
Peter Mulvey returns to Ballymore Eustace, Co. Kildare - where he has been coming for 20 years - to play BAG at Mick Murphy's Bar on Monday, April 23rd. I've been onboard since pretty much the start, and it is my personal pleasure to welcome him 'home' again. Doors will open at 8:30pm, when I will gently relieve you of €12 to fund Peter's continuing troubadouring around the world! Patrons are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Its a difficult challenge to select just one video to give the uninitiated a flavour of what Peter Mulvey's music is all about. But I've chosen a pretty recent one, off the current album, 'Are You Listening'. In it, he takes the ordinary, and makes it extraordinary - as is his gift. Pound for pound, a true heavyweight among American songwriters of our generation.
'DIA' - https://youtu.be/CjizWGaTFFU

Now, what the website says:

Peter Mulvey is a veteran singer and songwriter from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He began his career on the streets of Dublin, as a busker, and from there moved on to performing in the subways and streets of Boston. This led to his first record deal and a leap to full-time national and international touring, beginning in the early Nineties.

Mulvey is an iconoclast within the singer/songwriter world. Restless and inventive, he has made seventeen records,spanning rock and roll, folk, Jazz, spoken word, and Americana.
A long-standing gig at the National Youth Science Camp led toa spoken word piece, “Vlad the Astrophysicist”, which became a TEDx talk, and then an illustrated book. In 2007 he began an
annual late summer tour by bicycle instead of by car andairplane- the 10th annual bicycle tour will happen this September. He has taught songwriting and guitar workshops at the Swannanoa Gathering and at various folk festivals across the U.S.

In 2015, “Take Down Your Flag”, his song about the victims of the shooting at the AME Emanuel Church in Charleston, reached 200,000 people when many songwriters, including Ani DiFranco, Anais Mitchell, Keb’ Mo, Paula Cole, & Jeff Daniels, re-wrote the middle verse and posted their own videos of the song. This movement led to an online benefit concert, and a deepening of the friendship between Mulvey and DiFranco.
Early in 2016 DiFranco produced “Are You Listening?”, Peter Mulvey’s 17th record, which was released on March 24th 2017 on Righteous Babe Records.

Mulvey continues to tour, playing over a hundred shows a year as he has for the past twenty five years. This is the core of what he does: music, in a room, performed for a live audience.BAGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05879117787427270943noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6074649018840456679.post-62646147890449748832018-03-28T07:47:00.001+01:002018-04-09T09:25:04.694+01:00ARBORIST - Live at BAG - Monday, April 9th

ARBORIST (Mark McCambridge) makes his debut BAG appearance at Mick Murphy's Bar, Ballymore Eustace, Co Kildare, on Monday, April 9th. Doors open at 8:30pm. Admission is €12 at the door. Patrons are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.

I saw Arborist for the first time last December, opening for Malojian in Kilkenny's Set Theatre. I was hugely impressed with the material, and the charasmatic, yet understated stage presence. I knew immediately that I had to bring him to Ballymore, and I'm delighted to be able to do so. R.T.

ARBORIST released their debut album, 'Home Burial', in November 2016 to critical acclaim. UNCUT 8/10 “A staggering debut of depth and substance", ★★★★ The Guardian "A Man of My Age feels like an instant classic" and ★★★★ Mojo "A deliciously self-assured collection."
Listen to 'A Man Of My Age', here: https://soundcloud.com/arboristmusic/a-man-of-my-age

Mark McCambridge played his first show as ARBORIST in 2014 supporting James Yorkston. A solo tour of Ireland followed before impressive performances led to notable support slots alongside Low, Cat Power, Echo and The Bunnymen and Guy Garvey.

Since the release of their debut single "Twisted Arrow" in 2015, Arborist have become somewhat cult properties, thanks in no small part to KIM DEAL (Pixies, The Breeders) contributing delicate harmonies to the song. A nonchalant and thoughtful piece of Americana, conceived in Belfast, it premiered on Stereogum and The Line of Best Fit with extensive play on BBC 6 Music. It was also featured in The Guardian Guide’s tracks of the week.

A family trio comprising Noel Shine, Mary Greene and their daughter Ellie, their material straddles the boundaries of contemporary, folk and roots and includes many self-penned songs. Their fast picking and close harmonies are a treat to the ear.

Noel is a multi-instrumentalist, turning his hand to guitar, bass, mandolin, bouzouki and traditional whistle and this musical dexterity had seen him much in demand as a session and band player by artists as diverse as The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem and funk and soul legends The Republic of Loose amongst many others.

Mary brings rhythm guitar to the mix and her voice is a wonderfully versatile instrument. She is much in demand for her recording session work and has added her talents to the albums of Christy Moore, John Spillane, Mick Hanly and Frances Black as well as cult psychedelic outfit Dr. Strangely Strange. As a duo, Noel and Mary have released 3 critically acclaimed albums to date ~ The Land You Love the Best (placed no. 3 in The Irish Times Folk albums of the year of its release), Unspoken Lines (described as ‘The heart and soul of folk music, coming from a deeper well…,’ by John Spillane) while Mary’s solo, Sea of Hearts, earned an impressive 8 out of 10 in Hot Press.

Ellie Shine has grown up surrounded by music and has been performing in concerts and festivals since the age of 13 including an appearance with GREENSHINE for President Michael D. Higgins and his wife Sabina at The Abbey Theatre. Despite her tender years, Ellie has featured on 4 recordings to date. She has a huge interest in the songs of the Muskerry Gaeltacht and reached the All-Ireland final of Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann’s under 15 Sean-Nós Singing competition in her debut try-out. She enjoys singing songs of all genres and has a special place in her heart reserved for classic Beatles and country as well as good contemporary songwriting. She accompanies herself on the ukulele.

The music of Greenshine has been covered by several Irish music artists and has been used commercially by Follain Preserves in their ad campaigns, Carrie Crowley in her film Waterway and as signature tunes by several national radio station programmes.BAGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05879117787427270943noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6074649018840456679.post-87995359580231043682018-03-07T09:43:00.002+00:002018-03-09T12:22:29.387+00:00Pat Coldrick - Live at BAG, Monday, March 12

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">More info below.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Mick Murphy's Bar, Ballymore Eustace, Co. Kildare, Monday, March 12th. Doors open at 8:30pm, and Admission is €12 at the door.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">His music defies genre and appeals to a wide cross section of music lovers. While Pat plays his own arrangements of great classical pieces, it is his own compositions that sets him apart – pieces such as Lament, CityJam and Antarctica to name but a few.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">To date Pat has produced 2 albums – Cayendo in 2010 and CityJam was release in November 2014. Since CityJam was launched his music has been played on all the major radio stations in Ireland and was voted ‘Album of the Week’ on RTE Lyric FM. It’s fair to say that Pat’s music is currently attracting a lot of attention in classical quarters and beyond. Pat is now widely acknowledged as a very accomplished musician and composer who is succeeding in bringing classical guitar music ‘Centre Stage’ where he so passionately believes it belongs.BAGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05879117787427270943noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6074649018840456679.post-59890590833556440312018-02-23T08:24:00.000+00:002018-03-05T09:52:06.113+00:00I Draw Slow - Live @ BAG - Monday, March 5th
